How to Calculate How Much Mulch or Compost You Need
Working out how much mulch or compost you need is simple. Just follow these steps:
1. Measure Your Garden Bed
Multiply the length by the width to get the total area.
Example:
A garden bed that is 3 metres by 3 metres = 9 square metres.
2. Choose Your Depth
Most mulch and compost applications use:
-
5–10 cm for general garden beds
-
10–12 cm for landscaping or weed suppression
-
12–15 cm for pathways
To calculate volume, convert the depth to metres
(10 cm = 0.1 m).
3. Multiply Area × Depth
Using the 3m × 3m garden bed example at 10cm depth:
3 × 3 × 0.1 = 0.9 cubic metres
This is just under 1m³.
Quick Guide:
A cubic metre is roughly equal to 10 full wheelbarrows.
